Leaving Sarapiquí

From Sarapiquí to La Fortuna: the logistics

Sarapiquí is the lowland rainforest region around the town of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, on the Caribbean slope of the country. Its name comes from the Sarapiquí River, which is the main attraction: rafting and calm float trips, plus birding along the banks. The forests here are hot, humid and full of wildlife.

We pick you up at your lodge in the Sarapiquí area. Many lodges are a few kilometres outside Puerto Viejo, so tell us the exact property; it does not change the price. The drive to La Fortuna takes about 2 h 15 min, so even a late-morning pickup leaves the afternoon free in Arenal.

Once you are in La Fortuna you are close to everything the area is known for: the La Fortuna waterfall, the national park trails, the hot rivers and the lake. The driver leaves you at your hotel door and can point you to a good place for dinner.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 2 h 15 min of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Sarapiquí gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

Before you go

Before you leave Sarapiquí

  • Morning birding

Birds are most active at dawn; many lodges have trails right outside the room.

  • Dry the wet clothes

Humidity is high; hang river clothes the night before or pack them in a separate bag.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 80 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 2 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 4 west from Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí to Muelle, then Route 142 to La Fortuna
First stretch
River roads to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and Route 4 westwards

From your lodge the van heads into Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí and joins Route 4 westbound, a flat road through farmland towards Muelle.

With no mountain passes, the drive is gentle and predictable. On a clear day Arenal appears on the horizon long before you arrive, a perfect cone rising out of the flat land.

Along the way

What you'll see between Sarapiquí and La Fortuna

What to look out for on the road to Arenal:

  • Pineapple country

The Sarapiquí area is one of the country's big pineapple-growing regions; plantations line Route 4 for kilometres.

  • The Muelle crossroads

A busy junction town with fruit stands and roadside sodas; a natural place for a short break.

  • Pineapple and sugarcane

The northern plains are one of Costa Rica's big farming areas; you will see pineapple fields, cane and grazing land on both sides of the road.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

Our VIP upgrade (+$80 per vehicle) turns the transfer into a short tour: one to two hours of stops chosen with you, a bilingual driver-guide, a welcome kit and sparkling water on board. It is available on any route in the country. Ideas for this one:

  1. A riverside break in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí

A coffee or a fruit stop by the river in town before heading to the lodge.

Need more than two hours? Add up to 4 extra hours at $35 each when you book. On Standard the driver goes straight there and stops for the restroom whenever you ask.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

The lowland roads are mostly paved and flat, but they carry farm trucks and buses, and some bridges are one lane only. Drivers here also share the road with cyclists and livestock now and then, so the pace stays moderate.

If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Let wet clothes from the river dry overnight or pack them separately before the pickup.
  2. On a clear morning, look west as you approach Muelle: the cone of Arenal is often visible across the plains.
  3. A mid-morning pickup still gets you to La Fortuna in time for lunch and an afternoon at the hot springs.
  4. Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
