Your destination
Arriving in Río Celeste
Río Celeste is the river inside Tenorio Volcano National Park whose water turns an unreal sky blue. The colour appears where two clear streams meet and minerals in the water scatter the light, a spot known as Los Teñideros. A trail through the rainforest leads to the Río Celeste waterfall, the blue pools and the hot springs along the river.
The villages around the park are small and rural, with lodges and cabins set in the forest. It is a popular day trip from Arenal, but staying a night lets you walk the trail early, before the crowds. Swimming is not allowed inside the national park.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 1 h 30 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The Río Celeste trail
A forest trail to the blue waterfall, the lookout and Los Teñideros, where the colour appears; allow several hours with stops.
Hot springs by the river
Some lodges around the park have their own thermal pools, welcome after the muddy trail.
Tubing and farm visits
Outside the park, local operators run river tubing and visits to small farms.
The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 75 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 1 h 30 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 east, Route 4 west through Guatuso, then local roads to the Río Celeste area
- Last stretch
- Rural roads from Guatuso to the park area; some sections may be gravel
This is the shortest trip in this region. From La Fortuna the road runs a few kilometres east towards El Tanque and then joins Route 4, which heads north-west across farmland to San Rafael de Guatuso, the main town of the area.
Beyond Guatuso the route leaves the main road for the rural roads that climb gently towards the Tenorio volcano and the Río Celeste sector of the national park. The pace drops on this last part, which is why the fare table allows approx. 1 h 30 min for about 75 km.
After Guatuso the route leaves the main road and climbs gently through farmland and forest towards the park area. These rural roads are narrower, and some stretches may be gravel depending on maintenance; every vehicle we use drives them.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Río Celeste
The landscape changes several times between Arenal and Río Celeste. This is what passes the window:
The Guatuso plains
Flat cattle country and small farms between Arenal and the Tenorio volcano.
Rivers of the north
The route crosses several lowland rivers; after heavy rain you will see how quickly they rise.
Guatuso and the Maleku territory
The area around Guatuso is home to the Maleku, one of Costa Rica's indigenous peoples; some communities welcome visitors.
Tenorio Volcano
The forested peaks of the Tenorio massif rise ahead as you approach the park.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Heavy rain is common in the northern lowlands for much of the year and can flood low spots for a few hours. When that happens we take a detour or wait for the water to drop; we tell you if it changes the timing.
The main roads are paved, but the final access roads to the Río Celeste area are rural and narrower, with possible gravel sections. In heavy rain the river turns cloudy and loses its blue for a while; it usually returns within a few days.
If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.

- Insect repellent goes in the hand luggage; the lowland forests are humid.

- Wear shoes with grip for the trail, which is muddy and has steep steps down to the waterfall.
- Bringing surfboards, bikes or diving gear? Tell us when you book so we send a vehicle with room for it.
