Leaving Dominical

From Dominical to La Fortuna: the logistics

Dominical is a small, laid-back surf village where the Barú River meets the Pacific, at the northern end of the Costa Ballena coast. Its beach has powerful, consistent waves that draw experienced surfers, and the village has a relaxed mix of surf camps, sodas, juice bars and yoga studios under the palms.

We collect you at your hotel in Dominical or at your house in the hills. Some hillside properties are reached by steep gravel roads; every vehicle we use drives them, but send us the location pin and tell us if the last part is very steep.

In La Fortuna we drop you at reception. Most hotels sit along Route 142 between the town and the volcano, a few minutes apart. Arenal often hides in cloud during the afternoon, so do not worry if you cannot see it on arrival.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 5 h 45 min of driving, many travellers leave Dominical after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

  • Check the hill road

If you stay in the hills, give the driver the gate code or a phone number the day before.

  • Fruit for the road

Pick up fruit at a stand in the village for the long drive north.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Route 34, the Costanera Sur, is wide and paved all the way south but it carries trucks and weekend beach traffic around Jacó. Route 702 over the mountains is narrow, winding and often foggy on the high part, with a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez.

If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.
