Leaving Sierpe
From Sierpe to La Fortuna: the logistics
Sierpe is a small river town on the Sierpe River, at the edge of the Térraba-Sierpe wetland, the largest mangrove system in Costa Rica. For most travellers it is the gateway to Drake Bay and the northern side of the Osa Peninsula: the boats leave from the town dock and wind through the mangroves to the river mouth and along the coast.
We meet you at the Sierpe dock when your boat from Drake Bay arrives, or at your hotel in town. Boat times depend on the tide and the sea; send us the expected arrival time and keep WhatsApp handy on the day.
Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel, whether it is in town, on the road to the volcano or out towards El Castillo. If you arrive in the afternoon, the evening is a good moment for the hot springs; the volcano is usually clearest early the next morning.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 6 h 45 min of driving, many travellers leave Sierpe after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

The Sierpe River
A wide river lined with mangroves, where the boats to Drake Bay start their journey.

Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Tárcoles River bridge
A stop at the bridge on Route 34 to see the American crocodiles resting on the sandbanks below.
Finca 6 and the stone spheres
The Finca 6 site near Palmar Sur, part of the UNESCO-listed Diquís settlements, with a small museum and original spheres (entrance paid on site; check opening days).
Each additional hour of stops is $35, with a maximum of 4. Not booking VIP? Standard still includes a restroom or snack break on request.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
The South Pacific is one of the wettest parts of the country between about May and November, with heavy afternoon storms; in the dry months the light is clear and the sea calm. Rain can add time to a long drive, so we recommend an early start.
Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.
