Your destination
Arriving in Dominical
Dominical is a small, laid-back surf village where the Barú River meets the Pacific, at the northern end of the Costa Ballena coast. Its beach has powerful, consistent waves that draw experienced surfers, and the village has a relaxed mix of surf camps, sodas, juice bars and yoga studios under the palms.
Around it, the hills of the Fila Costeña hide jungle lodges and holiday homes with sea views, and the Nauyaca waterfalls are a short drive inland. Just north of the village, the Hacienda Barú wildlife refuge protects forest and mangroves along the coast.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 5 h 45 min of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 255 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 5 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 702 to San Ramón, down to the coast, then the Costanera Sur (Route 34) south past Quepos
- Last stretch
- Route 34 south past Quepos to the Dominical turn-off
This is a long run down the Pacific side of the country. The first part climbs over the mountains on Route 702 to San Ramón and drops to the coast; the second follows the Costanera Sur, Route 34, past Jacó, Parrita and Quepos and on into the South Pacific.
After Quepos the highway runs through palm plantations and over a long series of river bridges, with the mountains getting closer to the sea. Dominical is just off Route 34, at the mouth of the Barú River.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 34, the Costanera Sur, is wide and paved all the way south but it carries trucks and weekend beach traffic around Jacó. Route 702 over the mountains is narrow, winding and often foggy on the high part, with a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez.
Route 34 is paved and good all the way; the driving time comes from the distance and the mountain crossing at the start. In the rainy season, roughly May to November, heavy afternoon rain is common in the South Pacific, so morning departures are best.
Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.

Driver's tips for this route
- Start early: arriving in daylight makes the last stretch, often on smaller roads, easier.
- The Dominical beach break is powerful; if you are a beginner, ask about the gentler beaches nearby.
- Bring cash in colones for sodas and fruit stands; not every small place takes cards.
- Add your WhatsApp number when you book; it is the quickest way for the driver to reach you on the day.
