Your destination
Arriving in Ojochal
Ojochal is a small village in the forested hills just inland from the southern end of the Costa Ballena, south of Uvita. It has an unusually international community and is known in the region for its restaurants, with cooking far more varied than you would expect in a village this size.
Nearby beaches include Playa Ventanas, with its sea caves visible at low tide, and the southern sections of Marino Ballena National Park. Most accommodation is in villas and small lodges on the hills, reached by side roads off Route 34, several of them steep and gravel.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 6 h 15 min of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 285 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 6 h 15 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 702 to San Ramón, down to the coast, then the Costanera Sur (Route 34) south past Quepos
- Last stretch
- Route 34 past Uvita to the Ojochal turn-off, then hill roads
This is a long run down the Pacific side of the country. The first part climbs over the mountains on Route 702 to San Ramón and drops to the coast; the second follows the Costanera Sur, Route 34, past Jacó, Parrita and Quepos and on into the South Pacific.
The Costanera continues south past Uvita, between the beaches of Marino Ballena and the forested hills. The Ojochal turn-off leaves the highway inland, and the village and its lodges are spread along the side roads.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Ojochal
From the volcano to Ojochal, the view changes along the way:
Oil-palm country
Between Parrita and Quepos the highway crosses kilometres of African oil-palm plantations laid out in neat rows.
The Tárcoles River bridge
Crocodiles on the sandbanks below the bridge on Route 34, a classic stop on the way.
Playa Ventanas
A beach a few minutes from Ojochal, known for the sea caves that the tide washes through.
The southern Costa Ballena
Long beaches backed by rainforest, quieter than those further north.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:
Tárcoles River bridge
A stop at the bridge on Route 34 to see the American crocodiles resting on the sandbanks below.
If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 34, the Costanera Sur, is wide and paved all the way south but it carries trucks and weekend beach traffic around Jacó. Route 702 over the mountains is narrow, winding and often foggy on the high part, with a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez.
Route 34 is paved and good; the driving time comes from the distance. Side roads in Ojochal are narrow and steep, and some are gravel; after heavy rain they can be slippery, and the driver takes them slowly.
Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

- Add your WhatsApp number when you book; it is the quickest way for the driver to reach you on the day.
