Your destination

Arriving in Puerto Jiménez

Puerto Jiménez is the main town of the Osa Peninsula, on the calm shore of the Golfo Dulce, and the usual base for visiting Corcovado National Park, one of the most biodiverse places in the world. It is a small, friendly town with a waterfront, an airstrip, sodas and tour offices, and scarlet macaws are a common sight in its trees.

Lodges around it range from simple cabins to rainforest eco-lodges such as Lapa Ríos, near the tip of the peninsula. Corcovado itself is visited with a certified guide; tours and park permits are arranged separately. If your lodge is beyond Puerto Jiménez, tell us the exact location so we can confirm the route and timing.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 8 h 30 min of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 420 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 8 h 30 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 702 to San Ramón, the Costanera Sur (Route 34) to Palmar Norte, Route 2 south to Chacarita, then Route 245 along the Golfo Dulce
Last stretch
Route 2 to Chacarita, then Route 245 along the Golfo Dulce to Puerto Jiménez

South of Quepos the highway runs between the sea and the mountains of the Fila Costeña, through oil-palm plantations and over countless rivers. The coast gets wilder and greener the further south you go.

After the Costa Ballena, the route turns inland at Palmar Norte onto the Inter-American Highway (Route 2) and heads south to Chacarita. There it branches onto Route 245, which runs down the Osa Peninsula beside the Golfo Dulce to Puerto Jiménez.

Along the way

What you'll see between La Fortuna and Puerto Jiménez

Some of what you will pass on this drive:

  • The Fila Costeña

The coastal mountain range rises steeply behind the South Pacific beaches, with waterfalls visible from the road after rain.

  • The Tárcoles River bridge

Crocodiles on the sandbanks below the bridge on Route 34, a classic stop on the way.

  • The Golfo Dulce

One of the few tropical fjords in the world, a deep, calm gulf between the Osa Peninsula and the mainland.

  • Scarlet macaws

In Puerto Jiménez and along Route 245, pairs of scarlet macaws feed in the almond trees and fly over the road.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

Prefer to sightsee on the way? Tropical Experts VIP costs $80 more per vehicle and includes one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver who acts as your guide, a welcome kit of local beers, soft drinks and snacks, and sparkling water. We offer it on every route; here, you can ask for:

  1. Tárcoles River bridge

A stop at the bridge on Route 34 to see the American crocodiles resting on the sandbanks below.

  2. Finca 6 and the stone spheres

A short detour near Palmar to the Finca 6 site of the Diquís stone spheres, a UNESCO World Heritage site (entrance paid on site; check opening days).

Extra hours of stops cost $35 each, up to 4. Tell us what you would like to see when you book and we plan the timing around it. Standard goes direct, with a restroom break whenever you need it.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Route 34, the Costanera Sur, is wide and paved all the way south but it carries trucks and weekend beach traffic around Jacó. Route 702 over the mountains is narrow, winding and often foggy on the high part, with a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez.

All the main roads on this route are paved, but the distance is huge: about 420 km. Route 245 on the peninsula has narrow stretches and wildlife on the road, and the South Pacific gets heavy rain from about May to November. We plan a full day with rest stops, and we may suggest splitting the trip if you prefer.

Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Start early: arriving in daylight makes the last stretch, often on smaller roads, easier.
  2. Consider breaking the trip with a night in the Costa Ballena or Manuel Antonio; we can book it as two transfers.
  3. Bring cash in colones: card terminals and ATMs on the peninsula are fewer and sometimes offline.
  4. Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
