Leaving Cahuita
From Cahuita to La Fortuna: the logistics
Cahuita is a small, easy-going village on the southern Caribbean coast, with a strong Afro-Caribbean culture that shows in its music, its English-based Creole and its food, from rice and beans cooked in coconut milk to spicy rondón stew. Next to the village, Cahuita National Park protects a coastal forest trail and one of the country's main coral reefs.
We collect you at your hotel or cabin in Cahuita. The village streets are narrow and some are gravel; send us the location pin. Because this is a long drive, about 4 h 45 min in our fare table, we suggest a morning pickup.
Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel, whether it is in town, on the road to the volcano or out towards El Castillo. If you arrive in the afternoon, the evening is a good moment for the hot springs; the volcano is usually clearest early the next morning.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 45 min of driving, many travellers leave Cahuita after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

What you'll see between Cahuita and La Fortuna
The scenery changes more than once on the way to Arenal. This is what passes the window:
Cahuita National Park
The coastal forest and reef next to the village, with the trail starting a few steps from the centre.
The lowland rainforest
Between the farms, patches of tall, humid forest with palms and enormous trees; this is the wettest side of the country.
Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí
A river town in the middle of the Caribbean-slope rainforest, known for rafting, birding and research stations.
Tropical Experts VIP
VIP stops on this route
Our VIP upgrade (+$80 per vehicle) turns the transfer into a short tour: one to two hours of stops chosen with you, a bilingual driver-guide, a welcome kit and sparkling water on board. It is available on any route in the country. Ideas for this one:
A riverside break in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí
A coffee or lunch beside the Sarapiquí River, roughly halfway, is an easy stop to ask for.
Want more time? Each extra hour is $35 (up to 4) and is added in the calculator. The Standard service goes direct, with a restroom stop if you need one.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Rain on the Caribbean side follows its own calendar: it can pour in months that are dry elsewhere, and many visitors find September and October among the calmer months on the southern Caribbean coast. Heavy downpours can slow the drive at any time of year.
And if a road closure or extreme weather makes the transfer impossible, our terms let you choose: a new date or your money back in full.
