Your destination
Arriving in Cahuita
Cahuita is a small, easy-going village on the southern Caribbean coast, with a strong Afro-Caribbean culture that shows in its music, its English-based Creole and its food, from rice and beans cooked in coconut milk to spicy rondón stew. Next to the village, Cahuita National Park protects a coastal forest trail and one of the country's main coral reefs.
The park trail runs along white-sand beaches, with sloths, monkeys and raccoons in the trees; the entrance by the village has traditionally worked on a voluntary donation. North of the village, Playa Negra has dark sand and a quieter feel. Accommodation is mostly in small hotels and cabins.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 45 min of driving ahead, most travellers leave La Fortuna in the morning so they arrive in daylight.

The route
What to expect on the drive
- Distance
- about 285 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
- Driving time
- approx. 4 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
- Main roads
- Route 142 east to Muelle, Route 4 through Sarapiquí, then Route 32 towards the Caribbean
- Last stretch
- Route 32 to Limón, then Route 36 south along the coast to Cahuita
Route 32 is the backbone of the province of Limón: banana plantations, freight depots and long straight stretches, with plenty of trucks heading to and from the port. The landscape gets wetter, flatter and greener as you go.
From Limón, Route 36 runs south along the Caribbean coast, between coconut palms and the sea, crossing small rivers on the way to Cahuita. The village lies just off the main road, by the park entrance.
Along the way
What you'll see between La Fortuna and Cahuita

Banana country
Along Route 32 the plantations stretch for kilometres, with blue bags protecting the bunches and cable lines that carry the fruit to the packing plants.
The lowland rainforest
Between the farms, patches of tall, humid forest with palms and enormous trees; this is the wettest side of the country.
The Caribbean coast
South of Limón the road runs close to the sea, with palm-fringed beaches and fishing villages.
Cahuita National Park
The coastal forest and reef next to the village, with the trail starting a few steps from the centre.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Rain on the Caribbean side follows its own calendar: it can pour in months that are dry elsewhere, and many visitors find September and October among the calmer months on the southern Caribbean coast. Heavy downpours can slow the drive at any time of year.
Route 36 south of Limón is a two-lane coastal road with one-lane bridges in places. Route 32 carries heavy truck traffic and has been under works for years. The Caribbean has its own rainy pattern, so showers are possible in any month.
If a road closure or extreme weather means we cannot run your transfer on the day, our terms give you the choice of rescheduling or a full refund.
