Leaving Malpaís

From Malpaís to La Fortuna: the logistics

Malpaís lies just south of Santa Teresa, where the coast turns rockier and quieter towards the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It began as a fishing community, and fishing boats still go out from its small harbour, while tide pools and rocky points line the shore between short sandy beaches.

We collect you at your hotel or house in Malpaís. Many properties are on side roads up the hill, some of them gravel; send us the location pin. We confirm the route and the pickup time when you book, according to the time of day and the season.

Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel, whether it is in town, on the road to the volcano or out towards El Castillo. If you arrive in the afternoon, the evening is a good moment for the hot springs; the volcano is usually clearest early the next morning.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 6 h 30 min of driving, many travellers leave Malpaís after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

  • Tide pools

At low tide the rocky points of Malpaís form pools full of small fish and crabs.

  • The Gulf of Nicoya

Inland, the peninsula is a patchwork of pasture, teak plantations and dry forest that turns gold between January and April.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Roads on the southern peninsula are a mix of paved sections and gravel, especially the last kilometres to the beaches. They are dusty in the dry season and can be muddy and potholed in the wet one. All our vehicles drive gravel roads; the driver adjusts the pace to the conditions.

If we cannot run the transfer because of a road closure or extreme weather, you choose between a new date and a full refund.
