From Sámara to La Fortuna: the logistics
Sámara is a relaxed beach village on the Pacific side of the Nicoya Peninsula, set on a wide bay protected by an offshore reef. The reef keeps the water calm for much of the year, which makes Sámara one of the best beaches in Guanacaste for families, swimmers and beginner surfers, with Isla Chora sitting in the middle of the bay.
We collect you at your hotel or rental in Sámara. The village is compact; for houses in the hills, send us the location pin. Most travellers choose a morning pickup for the drive of approximately 4 h 45 min.
Your driver takes you to the door of your hotel, whether it is in town, on the road to the volcano or out towards El Castillo. If you arrive in the afternoon, the evening is a good moment for the hot springs; the volcano is usually clearest early the next morning.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h 45 min of driving, many travellers leave Sámara after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

From Sámara the paved road climbs over the hills to the town of Nicoya, where the route joins Route 18 towards the Tempisque bridge.
From there it is a short run south to Cañas and the climb to Tilarán, before the final section along the north shore of Lake Arenal on Route 142. The lake road and the peninsula roads are the two slow parts of the day.

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
On the peninsula the main roads are paved, but some of the access roads to the beaches are gravel, dusty in the dry season and muddy in the wet one. All our vehicles drive gravel roads; in the rainy season, river crossings and potholes can slow the last stretch.

Not on this route: from Arenal we cross to the peninsula by road, over the Tempisque bridge on Route 18. It is the most direct way from the north.
