Leaving Puntarenas · Caldera
From Puntarenas · Caldera to La Fortuna: the logistics
Puntarenas is the old port city of the Pacific, built on a long, narrow sandspit that reaches into the Gulf of Nicoya. Its seafront promenade, the Paseo de los Turistas, is lined with stalls selling churchill, the local shaved-ice dessert, and the passenger ferries to the Nicoya Peninsula leave from the city.
We collect you at your hotel, at the ferry terminal or at the agreed meeting point for cruise passengers. Ferry and ship times can change; send us the details when you book and message us on WhatsApp on the day if anything moves.
La Fortuna is a small town, and your hotel may be in the centre or several kilometres out on the road to the volcano. Either way, we go to the door. Arriving before dark leaves time to settle in and plan the hanging bridges, the waterfall or a volcano hike for the next day.
We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h of driving, a pickup after breakfast in Puntarenas · Caldera gets you to La Fortuna for lunch or the early afternoon.

From the city or the port area the van takes the coast roads towards Route 1, and within half an hour the gulf is behind you and the climb to San Ramón begins.
From Puntarenas or Caldera the van follows Route 17 and Route 23 inland to the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) and climbs east towards San Ramón, leaving the heat of the gulf behind.
At San Ramón it takes Route 702 north through La Tigra (or Route 141 via Zarcero) and drops down to the San Carlos plains and La Fortuna. The mountain half of the trip is the curvy one.

Before you travel
Road conditions and 2026 roadworks
Route 702 over the mountains is paved but narrow and winding, with one-lane bridges, fog on the high section and a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez; Route 141 via Zarcero is the alternative when needed.
Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.
