The service

Your private transfer from Esterillos to La Fortuna

This is a door-to-door service. Your driver meets you at your hotel, rental or house in Esterillos, your group travels on its own in a vehicle reserved for you, and we drop you at the entrance of your hotel in La Fortuna.

Prices are per vehicle, not per passenger, and nothing is added later: taxes, tolls, fuel, insurance, bottled water, WiFi and child seats come with every booking. Go Standard for the fastest trip or VIP (+$80) to stop along the way.

Leaving Esterillos

From Esterillos to La Fortuna: the logistics

Esterillos is a string of long, open beaches between Jacó and Parrita, usually divided into Esterillos Oeste, Centro and Este. It feels a world away from busy Jacó: few buildings, wide stretches of sand, coconut palms and a handful of small hotels and holiday homes along dirt side roads.

We collect you at your hotel or house in Esterillos. Several properties sit on gravel side roads off Route 34; every vehicle we use drives them, but send us the location pin when you book so the driver goes straight to your gate.

The trip ends at the entrance of your hotel in La Fortuna or around Arenal. Town has restaurants, supermarkets and tour offices within a few blocks, and many hotels on the volcano road have their own thermal pools for your first evening.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 4 h of driving, many travellers leave Esterillos after breakfast so they reach La Fortuna with time to spare.

Before you go

Before you leave Esterillos

  • Low-tide walk

Check the tide table; a morning low tide is the best time for a last walk.

  • Gate and keys

Leave keys and gate instructions as your host asks before the pickup.

From the beach the van takes the side road back to Route 34 and heads north, passing Jacó, Herradura and the Tárcoles River before turning inland.

Along the way

What you'll see between Esterillos and La Fortuna

What to look out for on the road to Arenal:

  • The coast south of Jacó

Route 34 flattens out south of Jacó, with views of the sea between farms and palm groves.

  • San Ramón and La Tigra

Mountain towns on Route 702, with one-lane bridges and frequent mist on the high part of the road.

  • From mountain to coast

In two hours the landscape goes from cloud forest and dairy farms to dry hills, mango trees and the Pacific.

Tropical Experts VIP

VIP stops on this route

Tropical Experts VIP adds $80 per vehicle and gives you one to two hours of stops, a bilingual driver acting as guide, a welcome kit (local beers, soft drinks and Costa Rican snacks) and sparkling water. We offer VIP stops on every route; on this drive these are the ones we suggest:

  1. Tárcoles River bridge

A stop at the bridge on Route 34 to see the American crocodiles resting on the sandbanks below.

If one or two hours are not enough, add extra hours at $35 each (maximum 4). Without VIP, the driver still stops for restrooms or a snack when you ask.

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Route 702 over the mountains is paved but narrow and winding, with one-lane bridges, fog on the high section and a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez; Route 141 is the alternative if needed. On the way down to the coast you may meet heavy trucks on the climbs.

Our terms cover the rare day when a closure or extreme weather stops the transfer: you can move it to another date or receive a full refund.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Have bags ready at the gate if your house is on a narrow track.
  2. Sand gets everywhere; a spare bag for beach things keeps the rest of the luggage clean.
  3. If you get carsick, the mountain curves come in the second half of this trip; take the front seat.
  4. Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
