The service

Your private transfer from La Fortuna to Punta Leona

A private transfer means the vehicle is reserved for your group alone. You choose the pickup time, we collect you at the door of your La Fortuna hotel and the only stops on the way to Punta Leona are the ones you ask for. No shared-shuttle timetable, no detours to other people's hotels.

What you see is what you pay, per vehicle: fuel, tolls, taxes, insurance, water, WiFi and child seats are all in the price. Standard is the direct trip; VIP adds $80 per vehicle and turns the drive into a day with stops.

Your destination

Arriving in Punta Leona

Punta Leona is a large private resort and nature reserve on a headland between the Tárcoles River and Herradura Bay. Inside the gated property are the Hotel Punta Leona, condominiums, forest trails and two of the prettiest beaches of the Central Pacific, Playa Blanca and Playa Mantas, with light sand and calm water.

The reserve is known for its wildlife, particularly scarlet macaws, which have been part of a long-running conservation programme in the area. Access is controlled at the entrance gate, and internal roads lead down to the hotel and the beaches.

We confirm the pickup time with you when you book. With approximately 3 h 45 min of driving, even a late-morning departure from La Fortuna leaves most of the day free.

The route

What to expect on the drive

Distance
about 140 km between the town centres (our measurement, approx.)
Driving time
approx. 3 h 45 min without stops (our fare table)
Main roads
Route 702 (or 141) to San Ramón, down to the coast, then the Costanera Sur (Route 34)
Last stretch
Route 34 to the Punta Leona gate, then the internal roads

Near the coast it joins the Costanera Sur, Route 34, the highway that runs along the Pacific shore past the Tárcoles River bridge and the beach towns of the Central Pacific. From here on the driving is easy and the sea appears on the right.

The final part leaves Route 34 at the Punta Leona entrance, a few kilometres after the Tárcoles River. After the security gate, the internal road winds through forest to the hotel and the condominiums.

Along the way

What you'll see between La Fortuna and Punta Leona

What to look out for on the road to Punta Leona:

  • The Tárcoles River bridge

The bridge on Route 34 where American crocodiles gather on the sandbanks below; many drivers slow down here and people walk the pavement to look.

  • From mountain to coast

In two hours the landscape goes from cloud forest and dairy farms to dry hills, mango trees and the Pacific.

  • Playa Blanca

One of the few light-sand beaches on this stretch of coast, sheltered and good for swimming.

  • Scarlet macaws

Pairs of macaws fly over the reserve and the Tárcoles area, especially early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

  2. Carara National Park

With extra time, a short walk in Carara, a few minutes from the gate, known for scarlet macaws (entrance fee paid on site).

Before you travel

Road conditions and 2026 roadworks

Route 702 over the mountains is paved but narrow and winding, with one-lane bridges, fog on the high section and a rough stretch reported in 2026 between Ángeles Sur and Bajo Rodríguez; Route 141 is the alternative if needed. On the way down to the coast you may meet heavy trucks on the climbs.

Inside the reserve the roads are narrow and hilly; the driver goes slowly and gives way to pedestrians and wildlife. On Route 34 nearby, weekend and holiday beach traffic can be heavy.

Should a closure or severe weather stop the transfer altogether, you can reschedule or get your money back in full, as our terms set out.

From the road

Driver's tips for this route

  1. Leaving on a weekday morning avoids the weekend beach traffic on Route 34.
  2. Give us the reservation name and building so we pass the gate without delay.
  3. The beaches are a short drive or walk from the hotel; ask reception about the internal shuttle on arrival.
  4. Keep water, sunscreen and a light jacket in your hand luggage, not in the boot: the weather changes on the way.
